The University of Maryland's Research Dialogue Fireside Chat Series is organized by the Division of Research and designed to provide the research community with opportunities to learn and expand knowledge on research administration and best practices. The series welcomes members of the University of Maryland College Park research community, as well as research community members at peer institutions across Maryland and beyond.

The University of Maryland Division of Research invites you to attend our next Research Dialogue Fireside Chat on Research Administration. This program is designed to provide the campus research community with opportunities to learn and expand knowledge on research administration and best practices.

The session will explore key questions, including:

  • What is ORCID and SciENcv?
  • How is the Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) involved in this?
  • How can I assist my researchers?
  • What Is UMD requiring, and what are the roles and responsibilities in certifying current and pending support?

ORCID is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. In this fireside chat, we’ll do a deep dive into how the need for identifiers was uncovered and demonstrate how the use of identifiers creates solutions for research, libraries/scholarly communication, and initiatives of the US Federal government. Join us as we connect the dots between ORCID, other identifiers, and how it creates relationships between silos on campus and with our US federal sponsoring agencies. In this talk, experienced research administration professionals Lori Ann Schultz, Assistant Vice President, Research Intelligence at the University of Arizona, and Wendy Montgomery, Assistant Vice President of the Office of Research Administration (ORA) at the University of Maryland, will share their knowledge about the field and its evolution.

Lori Ann Schultz has been a university research administrator for over twenty years and is currently the Assistant Vice President, Research Intelligence at the University of Arizona. She is also on the ORCID Board of Directors. She earned her Master’s degree at the University of Arizona in 2001. She has written numerous articles, hosted many webinars on Research Administration and more recently on ORCID, SciENCV and Current/Pending Support.

This Fireside Chat will be all about audits. Specifically, we will be chatting about why audits are necessary, the types of audits and desk reviews, and what triggers them. We will also be chatting about the most recent NSF Office of Inspector General report, entitled, Promising Practices for NSF Awards. We will be chatting with BSOS administration about being up close and personal with a USM audit. Finally, we will talk about the whistle blower hotline, Ethics Point, and a chat with a former USM Auditor.

The session will explore key questions, including:

  • What is Research Administration?
  • What is a Research Administrator?
  • What Do Research Administration Professionals Do and How Did We Get Here?
  • What Are the Things People Like Most About the Field of Research Administration?

The term “Research Administrator” has traditionally referred to someone working in a central university administrative office titled “Sponsored Projects,” “Sponsored Research,” “Grants Office,” “Contracts and Grants,” or something similar. These people were focused primarily on “pre-award” aspects of research administration. Now the term “Research Administrator” could be applied to many people involved in the management of grants, including the “post-award” aspects; in fact, many of these people might not even think of themselves as “research administrators.” In this talk, experienced research administration professionals Dick Seligman and Pat Hawk will share their knowledge about the field and its evolution.

Richard Seligman has been a university research administrator for more than fifty years. He retired as Associate Vice President for Research Administration at the California Institute of Technology after serving there for more than 25 years. Prior to joining Caltech, Dr. Seligman was at UCLA for 27 years in a variety of research administration positions. He earned a doctorate in higher education from UCLA in 1969. He has written on various research administration subjects, including conflict of interest, cost-sharing, and contracting with industry. Since 2016, he has served as an Adjunct Faculty Member in the Master’s Program in Research Administration at Johns Hopkins University.

Patricia Hawk retired as Assistant Vice President for Sponsored Research and Award Administration after a 15-year career at Oregon State University. She has been involved in research administration for more than 35 years. She began her career as a research administrator at the University of Virginia and has also worked at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development, the University of Oregon, and the Oregon Health and Sciences University. She has been an active member in NCURA during her research administration career. She has served on the Board of Directors in three different capacities and has also served as NCURA’s President.  She served as Senior Editor of NCURA Magazine, and also served on the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) Nominating Committee.
