About Us
The Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) at the University of Maryland–College Park provides a humane, ethical, and compliant environment for all animals involved in research, teaching, and testing activities. The university’s Animal Care and Use Program is overseen by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Veterinary care and program oversight are managed by the University Attending Veterinarian, who also serves as Director of the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR).
DLAR is a research support unit within the Division of Research and reports to the Vice President for Research. Our team includes experienced laboratory animal veterinarians, certified animal care technicians, and dedicated administrative staff, all with specialized training in laboratory animal medicine and care.
DLAR provides the expertise, resources, and services necessary to ensure the welfare of university animals through humane care and use. The UMD Animal Care and Use Program has been fully accredited by AAALAC, International since 2011, reflecting our commitment to excellence and compliance with the highest standards of animal care.

Providing expert veterinary care, including diagnostics, treatments, and preventive health measures to maintain optimal animal health.
Offering comprehensive training for researchers and staff on ethical animal handling, care, and use, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Providing access to anesthesia and monitoring equipment, dedicated surgical suites, and specialized units to ensure optimal research conditions and animal welfare.
Delivering advanced in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro imaging technologies to support preclinical research and data-driven discovery.

Emergencies
Rapid Response and Expert Care When It Matters Most
Emergency veterinary care is available 24/7, including weekends and holidays by contacting the On-call Veterinarian at 301-458-5047.
For urgent matters or animal facility emergencies, call the Customer Response Center (CRC) at 301-405-2222.
After contacting the CRC, please also notify the On-Call Veterinarian of the facility emergency by phoning 301-458-5047.
For other emergencies on campus, including gas smells, smoke or unusual odors, suspicious package, suspicious person, etc., report to Public Safety – call 911 from a campus phone, or 301-405-3333.
