The University of Maryland’s (UMD) Vice President for Research (VPR) recognizes that higher education institutions are operating in a dynamic and unpredictable research environment. This moment presents not only challenges but also an opportunity to adapt, innovate, and lead. With this in mind, the VPR established the Office of Research Operations Innovation (ROI) to spearhead several key efforts focused on operational efficiency.
One key effort is the VPR's strong commitment to developing AI initiatives that will support UMD’s research enterprise. These efforts focus on the following priorities:

The use of AI MUST align with all applicable laws, regulations, sponsor requirements, and University policies governing research integrity and the responsible use of AI in scholarly research and proposal development.
Engaging Ethically & Responsibly
AI can help analyze trends, anticipate shifts in federal priorities, and identify emerging areas of impact to accelerate innovation and sharpen UMD’s competitive edge.
