Brief Mission

The Genomics Core, established by the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics, provides faculty and students with a centralized resource where users have the opportunity to access automated nucleic acid sequencing and analysis instrumentation, as well as Real-Time PCR (qPCR) technology.

The Imaging Core (IC) provides researchers in the Life Sciences with the opportunity to image live, fixed, unlabeled or fluorescently labeled samples using one of several conventional and advanced light microscope systems, including upright and inverted fluorescence microscopes, laser scanning confocal and total internal reflection. Faculty, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students with any level of experience, from any department, are invited to use the facility's microscopes. Outside users are also welcome, though priority goes to UMD researchers.

The Imaging Incubator facility provides researchers with the opportunity to image live, fixed, unlabeled or fluorescently labeled samples using one of several advanced light microscope systems. Faculty, post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students with any level of experience, from any department, are invited to use the facility's microscopes. Outside users are welcome, as well, though priority goes to UMD researchers.

The Flow Cytometry Core provides researchers with the capability to detect and measure physical and chemical characteristics of a population of cells or particles. Examples of potential flow cytometric applications include:

  • Cell cycle analysis (fixed or live cells)
  • Measurement of fluorescent protein expression
  • Apoptosis and cell death measurement
  • Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET)
  • Ion mobilization measurements (i.e. Calcium flux)
  • Isolation of sub-populations of interest based on fluorescent characteristics
