Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

About the IACUC

Jump to:

The University of Maryland College Park (UMD) animal care and use program provides a humane and compliant environment for all animals involved in research, teaching and testing activities. The UMD Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for regulatory oversight of all research, testing and teaching projects that utilize vertebrate animals to accomplish objectives. The IACUC ensures compliance with federal, state and local animal welfare regulations through a careful review process of all Animal Study Protocols (ASPs), the administration of training and educational programs, inspections and other post approval monitoring processes, and investigation of reported animal concerns.

These pages and subsequent information and links pertain only to the UMD Animal Research Program. Researchers who are planning to work with animals at other universities within the University System of Maryland (USM) or other outside institutions must contact their own institution’s IACUC.

Veterinary care and other business aspects of this program, such as daily animal care and procurement of animal supplies, are managed by the University Attending Veterinarian, who also serves as the Director of the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR). You may be able to answer questions about animal housing, daily husbandry, procurement, imaging and other services by visiting the DLAR website or by email at contact-dlar@umd.edu.

To ensure the proper care of animals used for research and teaching, the UMD IACUC observes the principles and requirements espoused in the Animal Welfare Act (AWA)Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (PDF), and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (PDF).
