The University of Maryland ranks among the world’s top five universities for quantum research, according to The Quantum Insider, a news and market information source for the quantum technology industry.
Among a larger group of 18, including universities, industry and government labs and other research institutions, UMD placed eighth in the world, alongside giants such as IBM (which snagged the No. 1 spot), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max Planck Society.
The publication cited the prodigious research output from UMD’s quantum labs, as well as the university's foundational support for IonQ, the first pure-play quantum computing company to go public.
Maryland boasts hundreds of quantum researchers—one of the largest concentrations on the planet—working in eight related centers and institutes, and a long-running partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The publication, then known as The Quantum Daily, also named UMD among the top quantum research institutions in its 2019 ranking.
