Partnership Overview: FDA

FDA LogoThe University of Maryland and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have developed a strong partnership around food safety, as well as regulatory science innovation aimed at developing new methodologies for achieving efficient safety standards and approval processes for medical devices, biologics, and pharmaceuticals. Together, the FDA and UMD established the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) to advance sound strategies to improve public health, food safety, and applied nutrition using risk analysis principles through cooperative research, education, and outreach programs. The FDA also supported the creation of the Center for Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSI), a collaborative partnership between the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore focused on modernizing and improving the ways drugs and medical devices are reviewed and evaluated. Capitalizing on College Park's close proximity to the FDA campus, UMD researchers and FDA scientists engage in reciprocal workshops and seminars.
