Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR)

Each research facility shall assure that the attending veterinarian has appropriate authority to ensure the provision of adequate veterinary care and to oversee the adequacy of other aspects of animal care and use.

The Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) is a support unit for animal-based research and teaching at the University of Maryland. Our highly skilled and dedicated staff is comprised of technicians and technologist, certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), an internationally recognized leader for education in the field of laboratory animal care. Our staff provides care and treatment where it is needed under the direction of our attending veterinarian. In addition to our animal care program, we offer technical service training and species-specific training.

The DLAR is directed by the UMD Attending Veterinarian (AV). The UMD program of veterinary care assured by the AV must include provision of appropriate facilities, personnel, and equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. In addition, the AV is responsible for ensuring prevention, control, diagnosis and treatment of disease; daily observation, weekend and holiday care for animals, and providing guidance to principal investigators regarding care, handling, immobilization, anesthesia, tranquilization and euthanasia, as well as pre- and post-procedural care.

In this section, we provide a comprehensive listing of all veterinary guidelines and SOPs. For assistance and/or clarification, please contact the AV (see Office Contacts). All animal research at UMD must be performed in compliance with these guidelines, unless granted an exemption by the IACUC and in consultation with the AV.
