A $2.2 million grant will help launch a University of Maryland-led initiative to address the effects of environmental racism and climate change across the mid-Atlantic region, providing financial and training support and advocating for policy changes.

In recent years, preemptively removing blood clots from inside arteries and veins using a surgical technique called thrombectomy has significantly improved outcomes for people who otherwise might have experienced major strokes.

Thanks to the support of Arnold Ventures, a philanthropy dedicated to tackling some of the most pressing problems in the United States, four scholars from underrepresented groups will be able to pursue projects that could, in the words of Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Professor and Interim Chair Rod Brunson, “change the trajectory of their career.”
