Animal Care and Use Training
Animal Care and Use Training at the University of Maryland, College Park, consists of didactic and hands-on training covering a variety of topics and procedures. Training is designed to address core topics required by the federal animal welfare regulations and to help develop basic skills and proficiencies required for proper animal care and protocol support.
The IACUC Standard on local Animal Care and Use Training Requirements describes required and recommended training based on your role. The Animal Care and Use Training Calendar below shows current course offerings.
Initial PI/Animal User training is required for animal care and research personnel BEFORE starting work in an animal facility or being added to an animal use protocol. (Enrollment in Occupational Health and corresponding animal handler clearance is also required before working in an animal facility or being added to a protocol.) Register for Initial PI/Animal User Training by clicking here, or click an Initial training class link in the training calendar entry description below.
Refresher PI/Animal User training is required every three years. Register for Refresher PI/Animal User Training by clicking here, or click a Refresher training class link in the calendar entry description below.
The AALAS Learning Library (ALL) offers an incredible array of online courses designed for laboratory animal sciences professionals. DLAR covers your membership fees to the ALL. Contact DLAR to request an online account to the ALL. View the ALL Course Catalog here.
Once initial PI/Animal User training and Animal Handler Clearance are complete, and you have been added to a protocol, you may request Animal Facility Orientation training (facility orientation training is required before badge access will be granted to the animal facilities). You may also request hands-on training for basic animal handling and technical procedures. To request Animal Facility Orientation or animal handling and techniques training, complete the DLAR Training Request Form.
You may request badge access to a DLAR-managed animal facility by completing the online animal facility access. Once animal facility orientation training has been completed, your badge access will be activated.
