“ Each research facility shall assure that the attending veterinarian has appropriate authority to ensure the provision of adequate veterinary care and to oversee the adequacy of other aspects of animal care and use.”

The Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) is directed by the UMD Attending Veterinarian (AV). The UMD program of veterinary care assured by the AV must include provision of appropriate facilities, personnel, and equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. In addition, the AV is responsible for ensuring prevention, control, diagnosis and treatment of disease; daily observation, weekend and holiday care for animals, and providing guidance to principal investigators regarding care, handling, immobilization, anesthesia, tranquilization and euthanasia, as well as pre- and post-procedural care.

In this section, we provide a comprehensive listing of all veterinary guidelines and SOPs. For assistance and/or clarification, please contact the AV (see Office Contacts). All animal research at UMD must be performed in compliance with these guidelines, unless granted an exemption by the IACUC and in consultation with the AV.
