University of Maryland (UMD) Vice President for Research Gregory F. Ball and Vice President and Chief Information Officer Jeffrey Hollingsworth joined colleagues from IonQ, including CEO Peter Chapman, at the New York Stock Exchange in New York City on April 11, 2024, to ring the opening bell. The New York Stock Exchange welcomed IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) in advance of World Quantum Day to celebrate the company's contributions to quantum computing.
This marks the second time that IonQ was invited to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. Representatives from IonQ, together with UMD President Darryll Pines, rang the opening bell on October 1, 2021, to mark the day the College Park-based company went public and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the world's first public pure-play quantum computing company.
UMD is one of the world’s leading institutions of quantum science and engineering, working in close partnership with the National Institute of Standards and Technology as well as other federal agencies and labs. The university boasts more than 200 quantum researchers, eight quantum-focused centers and a comprehensive suite of quantum education offerings.
