Animal CUE Sheet

A bi-monthly (ish) communication with important information to keep you right on cue!

AR-24-25 | Issue 1

Introducing the Care & Use Express (CUE) Sheet

On behalf of the UMD Animal Care and Use Program: Welcome to the New Year!

For those of you who do not know me yet, my name is Scotty Beland, and I recently joined the IACUC office full time to focus on communications and data management. With that, we are starting a new communications initiative to foster transparency and preparedness among our animal research community.

The Animal Care and Use Express (CUE) Sheet will serve as a clean, consistent stream of communication to prepare our stakeholders for their ongoing transformative research efforts each semester! These bi-monthly (ish) communications will come at the beginning, middle and end of each Fall and Spring semester with reminders, important dates and news regarding protocol submission, policies, inspections and more. We hope that these CUE Sheets will create awareness and a stronger presence for our animal researchers as a resource in the College Park community. In the future, we also hope to keep an archive of these communications and other announcements as a point of reference for our researchers and the public.

Back in Action

As we gear up for Spring 2025, we wanted to share a few reminders so that you can have a productive semester:

If you have active protocols, check to see if they expire this semester so that you can renew without a lapse! See “Important Dates” below or on our website.

Also, make sure that personnel in your lab who will be working with animals are listed on your protocol, are up to date on PI/Animal User Training and Occupational Health enrollment, and documentation is printed and kept in your lab’s training log. Dates for PI/Animal User Training through March are also below (more PI/Animal User Training dates than usual will be available for January).

For new projects, the IACUC is utilizing a pre-review process for animal study protocol submissions, so you must submit your protocol on the 15th day of the month BEFORE the month in which the protocol will be considered at committee.

On January 6th, 2025, Dr. Aleaya Bowie and the DLAR Team launched a new system for Health Alerts for mice colonies in DLAR-managed facilities. Email dlar@umd.edu if you have any questions, or if you did not receive the email version of this communication.

The next round of semi-annual inspections will occur in April, and more information on Fall 2024 findings and preparation for Spring 2025 will come out March 11th.

Our newly appointed Attending Veterinarian, Dr. Luis Lugo, will be joining us this semester! He will be on campus beginning in February, with his official start date later in the Spring. He hopes to use this initial period to get to know your research programs and understand your needs. Stay tuned for more on that later, and a huge thank you to Dr. Shannon Stutler for stepping in as Acting AV for the last year!
