AI Initiatives

The University of Maryland’s (UMD) Vice President for Research (VPR) recognizes that higher education institutions are operating in a dynamic and unpredictable research environment. This moment presents not only challenges but also an opportunity to adapt, innovate, and lead. With this in mind, the VPR established the Office of Research Operations Innovation (ROI) to spearhead several key efforts focused on operational efficiency.

One key effort is the VPR's strong commitment to developing AI initiatives that will support UMD’s research enterprise. These efforts focus on the following priorities:

  • Turning Uncertainty into Opportunity: AI can help analyze trends, anticipate shifts in federal priorities, and identify emerging areas of impact to accelerate innovation and sharpen UMD’s competitive edge.
  • Improving Efficiency & Streamlining Processes: AI can enable a research ecosystem that is faster, more strategic, and more responsive, reducing administrative burden.
  • Augmenting Human Expertise: AI can reduce routine burdens and free our people to focus on complex problem-solving, bold ideas, and breakthrough innovation while amplifying creativity, judgment, and discovery.
  • Promoting Collaboration Across College Park and Baltimore: AI can be the connective infrastructure that accelerates interdisciplinary discovery, strengthens partnerships, and positions Maryland as a hub where convergent research drives real societal impact.
  • Engaging Ethically & Responsibly: AI MUST align with all applicable laws, regulations, sponsor requirements, and University policies governing research integrity and the responsible use of AI in scholarly research and proposal development.
