The University of Maryland Libraries will move into Phase 1 of reopening on July 13, 2020. Phase 1 is a preparation phase with no public access to buildings and no in-person services. The Libraries' many services, instruction sessions, and resources will continue to be available online. Progression to Phase 1 is based on state/USM plans to ease restrictions, and new guidance and protocols in place regarding staff/faculty safety, facilities readiness, etc. This initial phase includes:

On July 16, 2020, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $139 million in federal funding for 55 projects across the country that will support new and innovative advanced vehicle technologies. Funded through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), projects will conduct research in advanced batteries, electrification, and manufacturing in support of DOE’s Energy Storage Grand Challenge.

Osvaldo Gutierrez is breaking new ground on the road to synthesizing medicine. The University of Maryland assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry is creating shortcuts for costly experimental trial and error by modeling chemical reactions on computers before taking his experiments into the lab. The modeling allows him to predict how atoms and molecules will arrange themselves during chemical reactions and gives him a leg up on experimentation.

The University of Maryland Libraries have moved into Phase 2 of their reopening plan, as of Monday, July 27. During Phase 2, library staff are providing paging/curbside pickup of physical materials from the extensive general collections at McKeldin Library. (Note that at this time only McKeldin materials will be available for pickup; access to physical materials from other campus libraries and interlibrary loan materials will come later.)

The Brain and Behavior Initiative (BBI) at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce the recipients of FY20 BBI Seed Grants, a program now in its fifth year.

Phase 2 is characterized as Intermediate Presence. If you are able to continue to do your research remotely, please do so and do not return to campus at this time.

On Monday, September 14, 2020, the University of Maryland Libraries' will move to Phase 3 of reopening, which includes appointment-based access to McKeldin Library's study spaces and Hornbake's Maryland Room. Researchers will also have access to a newly launched "Virtual Maryland Room" to obtain services from Special Collections and University Archives.

The University of Maryland has announced the launch of a new Research Leaders Fellows Program for faculty this fall. The program is designed to support its newest research leaders, helping promising scholars expand their impact in their fields while providing the leadership skills to compete for large-scale multidisciplinary awards.
