A pioneering art exhibition that opened during the U.S. bicentennial had the bold idea of showcasing the work of artists who were too often painted out of the nation’s canvas.“Two Centuries of Black American Art,” curated by the late artist and University of Maryland Distinguished University Professor David C. Driskell, rocked the art world in 1976 with its rarely seen paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and crafts by Black artists.
