The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the University of Maryland $8.75 million to fund four research projects aimed to lower American energy bills by investing in new energy-efficient building technologies, construction practices, and the U.S. buildings-sector workforce.

On September 9, the National Science Foundation announced that it will fund a new endeavor to bring atomic-level precision to the devices and technologies that underpin much of modern life, and will transform fields like information technology in the decades to come.

University of Maryland Fischell Department of Bioengineering Associate Professor and alum Kimberly Stroka (Ph.D. '11) was awarded a five-year, $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of General Medical Sciences to investigate how a particular protein that is known to control water transport across the cell membrane also influences cell migration in a range of physiological and pathological processes.
