Announcement: Research Security Update

University of Maryland Establishes New Research Security Office

The following message was sent to the Division of Research on behalf of Vice President for Research Gregory F. Ball:

Dear Colleagues,

The Division of Research is pleased to announce the following staff appointments, reflecting a proactive approach to building our support infrastructure with a focus on protecting our researchers and securing our research enterprise.

In September, we hired Reka Montfort as Director of our new Research Transparency and Outreach Office.  Many of you know Reka from her long-term role as Director of the University Senate.  In her new role, Reka is focused on campus-wide outreach and compliance efforts, with a focus on funding-agency requirements related to the disclosure of current and pending research activities including other sponsored projects, outside activities, and gifts.

We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Adam Grant as Director of the new Research Security Office, which will serve as the central hub for the creation and administration of a research security program, a requirement mandated by NSPM-33 for all research institutions with greater than $50M in annual research funding.  Many of you know Adam as the Director of the Export Compliance Office.  The newly launched Research Security Office will engage with stakeholders and process-owners to create a coordinated approach for meeting program requirements while providing the best support possible for our research community.  In addition to these coordinating functions, the Research Security Office will directly administer many of the processes that relate our unclassified research portfolio, including export compliance, foreign engagements, and managing data security requirements.  The Research Security Office will absorb the scope of the former Export Compliance Office.  We will also be adding an additional staff member to help manage the additional requirements.

We would like to thank Reka and Adam for taking on these important new roles to help ensure the security and transparency of our research enterprise.

Best,

Gregory F. Ball
Vice President for Research
