Who We Are

Message from the Vice President

As one of the world’s premier research institutions, the University of Maryland strives to transform lives by discovering new knowledge and putting it to work to benefit the state, our nation, and the global community. The breadth of research across our schools and colleges is fueled by more than 4,600 faculty who are developing innovative, research-driven solutions to critically important national and international challenges.

The mission of the Division of Research at the University of Maryland is to support and advance the impact, scale, and visibility of the campus research enterprise; to develop and implement research policy; and to ensure compliance with federal, state and university policies and regulations. The Division of Research develops research partnerships with federal agencies, national laboratories, and industry, fosters campus-wide interdisciplinary research initiatives, promotes technology transfer, initiates and supports new ventures and economic development programs, and oversees pre- and post-award activities, regulatory compliance, and strategic research administrative processes.

To help accelerate our drive toward societal impact, we collaborate with fellow academic institutions in the U.S. and abroad. We are an active member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Association of American Universities, and Universitas 21. The University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State initiative unites the complementary research strengths of the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore to achieve significant interdisciplinary collaborations and economic impact. The combined research enterprise of the University of Maryland, led by the Vice President for Research, is home to groundbreaking discoveries that impact the lives of people in our state, nation and the world, and ranks among the top 20 institutions in the nation in R&D expenditures.

The Division of Research operations are divided into three core areas:

The University of Maryland strives to meet the highest standards for integrity in all areas of research endeavors, including authorship and publication; data management and reporting; export compliance; conflict of interest and conflict of commitment disclosures and transparency; mentorship; use of human subjects or animals; laboratory, biological and radiation safety; and financial management and reporting. To that end, we are dedicated to providing our faculty, students, trainees, and staff with the support, education, and resources necessary to ensure a culture of integrity and excellence in every aspect of their work.

We foster a comprehensive innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to activate fearless ideas within university research, translating new knowledge into new ventures that stimulate the regional economy, achieve societal impact, and contribute to the public good. Spanning more than 150 acres, our Discovery District provides a hub for industry, university, and government research.

The University’s close proximity to Washington, D.C., and collaborations with federal agencies and industry allow our campus to help advance research initiatives focusing on the most important national and global challenges.

I welcome you to learn more about our quest to become a model 21st century research university, where innovation and creativity lead to high impact solutions for our global society.

Dr. Gregory F. Ball
