Overview
Animal Care and Use Training at the University of Maryland, College Park includes both didactic and hands-on instruction covering core topics and procedures for animal research.
Training is designed to:
Meet federal animal welfare regulations and guidance (e.g., the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching).
Develop the skills and proficiencies required for proper animal care, humane use, and protocol support.
The IACUC Standard on Local Animal Care and Use Training Requirements describes all required and recommended training based on your role.

Training Requirements for Animal Work at UMD
Initial PI/Animal User Training
Required before starting work in an animal facility or being added to an animal use protocol.
Occupational Health Enrollment & Animal Handler Clearance
Required before working in an animal facility or being added to a protocol.
PI/Animal User Refresher Training (every 3 years)
Required every 3 years to ensure ongoing compliance and updates on current issues and policies.
Animal Facility Orientation Training
Required before badge access is granted to DLAR-managed animal facilities.
Hands-On Animal Procedure Training (as applicable)
For personnel performing animal handling, technical procedures, or using DLAR anesthesia equipment.
