UMD’s Mote Elected President of the National Academy of Engineering

Dr. C.D. (“Dan”) Mote, former President of the University of Maryland, has been named the one and only nominee to serve as the next president of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This is a full-time position working at the organization’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., with a six-year term beginning July 2013. The president also works as the vice chair of the National Research Council. Official voting will begin March 2013.

The National Academy of Engineering is a part of the National Academies. The NAE is an independent, nonprofit institution that advises the public and government on engineering-related issues. Established in 1964, members of the NAE are some of the nation’s leading engineers, nominated by their peers based upon achievements and experience.

Dr. Mote is a mechanical engineering professor at the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park and the former university president from September 1998 till August 2010. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he served on the faculty for 31 years. Mote is globally recognized for his work with the dynamics of gyroscopic systems, such as high-speed translating and rotating systems, and for his research on the biomechanics of snow skiing. He has authored or co-authored over 300 publications, holding patents in four different countries. Currently, he is the treasurer of the NAE and a member of the Research Council’s Governing Board Executive Committee.
